E-Bike Battery Charging & Maintenance Guide

Your e-bike battery is the heart of the system. Treat it well, and it’ll deliver consistent range and performance for years. Ignore a few basics, and its lifespan drops fast.

Living and riding in the Columbia Valley means dealing with real temperature swings from hot summers, cold winters, and shoulder seasons that catch people off guard. Those extremes matter when it comes to battery health. We see the results every year, which is why we put this guide together.

A few smart habits go a long way toward keeping your battery reliable, efficient, and safe; no matter the season.

How to Charge Your E-Bike Battery

Charging an e-bike battery is simple, but how and when you charge it makes a big difference over time.

Best Practices for Battery Charging

  • Charge within the recommended temperature range
Always follow your manufacturer’s guidelines. Most manufacturers recommend charging between 0°C and 35°C. Charging outside this range can interrupt charging and permanently reduce battery life. If it’s cold, bring the battery indoors and let it warm up before plugging it in.

  • Don’t leave it on the charger indefinitely
Once the battery is fully charged, unplug it. Leaving it connected for long periods after it’s done charging adds unnecessary stress over time. When the indicator turns green, you’re done.

  • Store partially charged for long periods
If you’re storing your bike for weeks or over the winter, aim for around 60% charge. Fully charged or fully depleted batteries don’t store well and degrade faster. If the battery is removable, remove it from the bike and store it somewhere that is warm and dry. For e-bikes with a non-removable battery, store the bike inside the house or a heated garage.

Lakeside Tip:
Cold batteries don’t like being charged, and hot batteries don’t like being left full. Temperature management matters more than most riders realize.
